"Enemies Of Promise"

1. Technology is unreliable
- With newer technology can or will people trust it??   ie. Y2K, IPhone bugs
2. Technology is replacing human effort
-At what limit will technology replace the human effort??
-What are the effects of the increased dependence on technology on the economy in terms             of labor, management, efficiency, and the bottom line?
3. Technology's endless improvements
-At what length will society become so dependent on technology, that with out its vast              improvements, society itself will become worthless without it?

I would like to answer your third question. I think that society is very very close to being too dependant on technology. I have worked in classrooms before, and have found that some students have no idea how to use a book for research. I have heard stories of 3 year olds with cell phones and "practice" computers. I often wonder how soon it will be before children aren't taught how to write things by hand.
I think it would be safe to say that if all the computers of the world shut down right now. The US would go into chaos. So many depend on computers for banking, communication, applying for jobs, heck...I wouldn't be able to submit my homework. We are very dependant upon technology. I don't do much on my own without it. I would call our society quite near worthless without our technology.

In response to question one, I believe that it is only natural that as technology advances and becomes more complex the chances that something will malfunction will rise. That being said i also believe that we can still rely on technology while accepting that while using these tools we may need to repair or tweak them as they age.

In response to question 2. I feel that technology will lower the amount of effort humans put forth but I believe that human effort will always remain. I believe that technology needs human effort to flourish and become more intelligent and effective. Humans have created more technological advances to make things easier on everyone, this may cause some laziness and lack of effort but I believe that technology will enhance the outcome of peoples productivity and creativeness. Also the fact that people have create such a technology actually helps prove the fact that humans are puting in a great effort to make things better and easier for themselves as well as others.

If feel that technology is limited by the scientific knolage of the time and that people will never reach a point were techonolgy out ways new ideas. so no socity will never turly become dependent on technology because it will always or thus far has been limited by science.

Response to blogged question:
With newer technology, can or will people trust it?

I think this is an interesting question. It poses the notion of security and reliability. I personally feel that technology is taking amazing leaps and bounds into the next century, but at the cost of privacy. One major component of this argument is Google earth. Sure, it's a great way to figure out where I'm going in a foreign area, but it's the street views that bother me. There are actual vans driving around with cameras, taking street view pictures of homes, businesses, and parks. This seems a little evasive to me. Not to mention the national security that could potentially be compromised because any terrorist can hop on Google earth.
Another argument is abusing technology. Our own government takes the technology that is created, and uses it against us. I'm not paranoid, but there are things out there like mind control devices, surgically implanted trackers, and of course nuclear weapons, that cause more damage and fear than good. This is where the mistrust for technology lies. It's not necessarily the actual technology that is not trusted. It's the hands in which the technology lies in that creates the problem.

Good job on the assumptions and questions. You are missing the factors that influenced each assumption. Also I'm not sure about each individual contribution. Group Grade: A-
